The Princess Bride was a romantic comedy movie released back in 1987 about a farmhand called Westley who goes on an adventure with him comrades to save his one true love Princess Buttercup from the main antagonist Prince Humperdinck.
Inigo Montoya is another character from the movie who meets Westley along his journey to defeat Humperdinck. Although he is always shown to be inebriated he is infact skilled at his craft as a swordsman.
In today’s post we’ll show you how to put together a Princess Bride Inigo Montoya Costume for Halloween and cosplay events. As there is no official costumes available at the time of writing we’ll need to start from scratch and use a little creativity.
Eventhough there are some generic pre-packaged Renaissance style outfit that could possibly work well here I’d suggest going the do it yourself route for the most accurate results. You can check out your local thrift stores to pool together all the items you’ll need or check out the products we’ve sourced below.
So if you want to dress as this dashing Spaniard without further ado let’s begin!
Table of Contents
Princess Bride Inigo Montoya Wig
Inigo Montoya has short curly brown hair and a brown moustache. If your hair if not suitable for this you’ll need to wear a wig such as the one above or check out local costume stores for wigs offline. Again if you don’t have a moustache you’ll need to do with a fake one.
Before we move on from the face area Inigo Montoya also has two long scars going down both cheeks that were gained when Rugen slashed him with his rapier. To keep as close to the source material as possible you could replicate these scars using spirit gum copying a clear reference image.
Inigo Montoya Shirt
The next item you’ll need is a brown tunic shirt. Inigo Montoya is from the Renaissance era so that is the style you want to replicate. Although this isn’t an exact replica check out this Renaissance style brown shirt we have above which comes with lace up front and long sleeves or scour local thrift stores for a similar item.
A brown tunic that looks well worn would be ideal. Add a loose white shirt for underneath which can show through the open front. Don’t forget to pick up a pair of brown leather pants while you’re at it.
Inigo Montoya Sword
Another item you cannot be without is a sword as Inigo Montoya has to fight alongside Westley so a weapon is crucial for the journey. Check out this Renaissance style fencing sword paired with a leather sword frog to keep it at your side at all times.
A note of caution before purchasing: this is not a toy and can do some damage if you’re not careful as there is a pointed tip. To stay on the safe side go for a toy sword instead but for added realism and detail go with the rapier fencing sword with swept hilt guard. It shouldn’t need to be said that anything other than a toy sword is not suitable for children or teenagers.
Inigo Montoya Boots
The final item you’ll need is a pair of Renaissance style boots. Inigo Montoya wears long brown boots that are made from a suede-like material. You could wear the whole boots themselves but that would be pricey or in this case boot tops will do just fine over your regular pair of boots to give them that dated look.
Now that the outfit is completed don’t forget to practice Inigo’s infamous catchphrase that has now been turned into a meme courtesy of social media: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” Thankfully that is not the only one you could go with; sprinkle them in throughout the night and see if anyone notices.
That is everything you’ll need to transform into everyone’s favorite character from Princess Bride. Before you go check out the rest of our tutorials on the blog and to stay up to date follow us on social media for updates.
