As a 90’s kid I fondly remember watching the Emperor’s New Groove movie and the subsequent television series when it aired on Disney Channel.
The movie is a fun slapstick comedy focusing on Emperor Kuzco who is magically transformed into a llama by the evil villain YZMA, with the help of a village leader the he tries to change back to his original form.
YZMA is the main antagonist from the movie; her menacing figure and purple attire should tell you that from the offset. It is also noted she takes many features from another infamous: Disney villain Cruella De Vil.
Below we’ll be guiding you how to create a YZMA Emperor’s New Groove Costume for cosplay conventions and Halloween. We’ll be dissecting her entire outfit including dress, headpiece and makeup. Without further ado let’s begin!

The first thing is YZMA’s headpiece which consists of black hat with a large curved purple feather attached. To recreate this yourself either use a black headband or piece of felt cut into a flat hat shape, then attached a purple ostrich feather to the top.
Next you’ll need a purple boa for around your neck. You can also create a collar piece using some of the leftover black felt from your hat. Add a pair of disk drop blue earrings or create your own using light blue felt cut into round circles and glued onto a pair of old earrings you no longer use/need.
For her dress there are two different styles you can go with. A majestic black strapless maxi dress with a slit front which matches this character perfectly. Or you can opt for a black tube dress; not as majestic but less material to get in your way (an important consideration depending on the event you’re attending).
YZMA Emperor’s New Groove Makeup
The final step is the makeup which will bring the whole outfit together. Here’s a quick tutorial under five minutes to guide you with text instructions below for those who prefer to read.
- We begin by hiding the eyebrows so use a washable glue stick applied in one direction to tack your brows down. For the skin take a purple face paint mixed with grey and apply it to your face and body. Next draw in your eyebrows with black face paint on a thin brush, while you’re at it create the eyelids with that same paint and underneath that draw eye bags. Apply purple onto your lids and grey underneath on the bags. Line your upper lash line and darken it to make it more cat-like.
- Contour your cheekbones with that same grey eyeshadow to make them look sunken in, as well as adding shadow to your forehead and jawline. If you don’t have a slender neck you can contour that also. Now start on the nose drawing a little triangle and darkening your nostrils for a cute upturned effect. With the same brush deepen your smile lines an draw a few lines on your lips, underneath your eyes and forehead.
- For the lips take a dark red lip liner to outline the lip shape creating two mountain shapes for the upper lip and a ‘V’ shape for the bottom. Finish by applying a fuchsia lipstick. Cut strips of black paper as she does in the video for your eye lashes and stick them to your lids using lash glue.
There you have it, now you’re transformed into the wonderful villain from Emperors New Groove YZMA. If you pull off this look successfully you’ll have people taking photos with you all night! Before you leave be sure to check out the rest of the blog and follow us on social media for updates.
