One of my favorite shows on Nickelodeon as a kid was Fairly Odd Parents, the character and wacky episodes were what kept me watching. There was nothing better than sitting down with my siblings to watch a new episode each week.
The series was extremely popular at one time, even rating higher than Spongebob Squarepants at times and it remains a classic to this day. It features a kid which has two fairy godparents that grant him wishes, it’s not the wishes that are the main focus of the show but the results of these wishes. The moral of the story is be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.
Today we’ll be looking at how to create your own Cosmo and Wanda costumes from scratch, right in time for Halloween and perfect for cosplay. There are several parts to this outfit and how you go about constructing them will depend on whether you want to do it yourself or buy pre-made (each way is fine).
Wanda Fairly Odd Parents Costume
Next you need to consider hair for both Cosmo and Wanda, as these two have very different styles. The easiest way to create the Wanda hairstyle is to wear a pink wig in a similar style, the only problem with this is that something similar is extremely hard to find.
We’re starting with Wanda from the duo. You will just need a plain yellow shirt, something you can easily pick up from the thrift store or find in your closet otherwise check the link above.
Then add a pair of black leggings or jeans/trousers if you haven’t got any and a pink wig. Style the wig with a curl at the front such as the wig we have picked out that would fit this character perfectly! Alternatively use temporary pink hair dye and use a curling iron to get the curly edge to your hair. Finish with plain black shoes.
Cosmo Fairly Odd Parents Costume
Cosmo’s outfit is just as simple to recreate all you need is a white dress shirt such as the one above, a black tie to go along with it and plain black pants. These shouldn’t be difficult to find.
For Cosmo’s hair you can either go for a wig such as the one above and simply style it to match the character, or you could use this temporary green hair color spray to get the desired result. Again finish with a pair of plain black shoes.
Cosmo and Wanda Crown DIY
If you’re stuck for time pick up this set of golden fairy hats that will work well with this theme. They are intended for part favors but the smaller size makes them perfect for these costumes.
Try to find a fairly sturdy piece of yellow felt or card to work on, then draw on a crown template.
In the cartoon the fairly odd parents wear fairy crowns that hover a few inches above their heads, you want to try and emulate this effect. First you need to create the yellow crowns, the easiest way being card.
Use the image to the left to help you, it looks exactly like that. Leave enough length so that you can curve it back around and tape it together.
Now to attach it to your head and give it the floating effect, choose either craft pipe cleaners or regular wire and attach it to a headband. The tape the card crown to the headband, you’re finished.
Cosmo and Wanda Wands
The next thing we have to ‘create’ is the wands, these are typical fairy wands with yellow five sided stars with a black stick. Again you can use sturdy yellow felt or card to create the star although felt would be better and a little sturdier.
For the stick you could use a wooden round craft stick, heck you could even use a ice pop stick if you wanted. Then paint it black and tape it onto the foam cut out. Better yet grab a black pipe cleaner and glue them one and then you go!
Cosmo and Wanda Wings
The final part is the wings, looking online it’s not hard to find out how you can make these yourself. You’ll need wire coat hangers which you do not mind ruining, and a pair of stocking you don’t mind getting rid of.
With these two items in place use a pair of wire cutters to cut, bend and shape the hangers into the right shape. Once they are in shape, bend the ends together so they retain their shape. Next pull the stockings over them and use a length of ribbon to create a loop to attach the wings to your body.
The final things to do before you call it a day is apply some makeup and eyeshadow (pink under the eyes for Wanda) and possibly wear green and pink contacts.
