We’ve all heard of Hercules from ancient Greek mythology, the son of Zeus who is known for his super human strength. In 1997 Disney created a movie and television to tell his story in a way that would be relatable to modern day audiences.
Although it didn’t perform well at the box office when it was first released that didn’t stop it becoming a cult classic, popular in cosplay communities to this day.
Megara is one of the main characters from the movie who was based off of another mythical figure from Greek mythology as the wife of King Creon of Thebes. In the film she is a love interest of Hercules and is seen as the movie’s heroine with a quick-witted but cynical personality.
Today we’ll be looking at how to create a Megara Hercules costume from the popular Disney movie. We’ll touch on her outfit, hair and makeup; everything you’ll need to transform yourself for cosplay conventions and Halloween.
To start you’ll need to either wear a wig or your natural hair if it is the appropriate length and color. You can use a long brown costume wig for this, styling appropriately and accessorizing with a purple headband or purple scrunchie if you prefer.
Moving onto the outfit itself Megara wears a simple purple dress with darker purple scarf across the waist. You could easily find these items on sale at the thrift store or check online for lilac purple dresses such as the one above which you can style with a purple belt/scarf to add shape and an extra pop of contrasting color.

For better instructions for hair and makeup check out this quick tutorial with text instructions below for those who prefer.
- Before you begin use your regular moisturiser to keep your face hydrated and then your regular foundation finally use a concealer to conceal dark circle. Next grab your contour palette to carve out your cheeks and then add some blush. Emphasize the shape of your eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil to throw homage to the Greeks. Start with a creamy white base on your eyelid and brow bone, next put the brightest purple all over your eyelid then with a darker purple into your crease and blend it all out. Use a sparkly lavender color on the center of your eyelid as highlight and set it all with powered foundation.
- Finish the whole eye off by giving yourself a cat eye look with black liner and line your lower lash line and apply mascara. Next apply a pink lipstick, with a darker purple gloss on the top lip. That’s the makeup done now onto hair.
- You can have brown or red hair for this part otherwise you’ll need to dye it so it better matches the character. Once you’ve done that section off the top part of your hair sing the tail end of a comb and carve in a little ‘upside down U shape’, clip the rest of it away and hairspray that section straight up. Tease it in sections and start rolling it towards your face from the end (you can curl this section of hair beforehand to make things easier). Boby pin and hair spray it as much as you need. Curl iron the front part of your hair and pull the rest into a high ponytail. If you want use a brown hair clamp to hold that ponytail in place and keep it up, putting a gold bracelet or scrunchie at the base.
There you have it, everything you need to transform into this not so typical Disney princess. Before you leave you can check out the rest of our tutorials on the blog or follow our social media channels for updates on the latest guides we publish. Until then have fun!
